Background of the Study
Social exclusion remains a critical issue affecting persons with disabilities, leading to adverse psychological outcomes (Ibrahim, 2023). In Ido, traditional stigmas and systemic barriers have perpetuated the marginalization of disabled individuals, exacerbating feelings of isolation and low self-esteem (Okeke, 2024). Recent studies highlight that exclusionary practices in education, employment, and social interactions significantly impair mental health (Ekwueme, 2023). Moreover, the cultural context of Ido contributes to entrenched biases, limiting access to resources and support (Umeh, 2025). Investigating the intersection of social exclusion and psychological well-being is essential to develop inclusive policies (Adeniran, 2023). This research examines the complex dynamics that contribute to social exclusion and the subsequent psychological ramifications for persons with disabilities, aiming to offer evidence-based recommendations for community integration and improved mental health outcomes (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities, social exclusion remains prevalent in Ido Local Government Area (Anyanwu, 2023). The persistent stigmatization and limited access to social and economic opportunities contribute to significant psychological distress among disabled individuals (Nwachukwu, 2024). The lack of robust empirical data on these impacts further complicates the development of targeted interventions (Ifeanyi, 2023). This study addresses the urgent need to systematically investigate how social exclusion affects the psychological health of persons with disabilities in the community.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the extent of social exclusion experienced by persons with disabilities.
  • To evaluate the psychological effects of exclusion on mental health.
  • To propose strategies for enhancing social inclusion and support.

Research Questions:

  • What forms of social exclusion are most prevalent among persons with disabilities in Ido?
  • How do these exclusionary practices affect psychological well-being?
  • What interventions can improve social inclusion in the community?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Social exclusion is significantly associated with increased psychological distress.
  • H2: Inclusive practices are linked to improved mental health outcomes.
  • H3: Community-based interventions reduce the negative psychological impacts of exclusion.

Significance of the Study
This study is vital for informing policy and practice regarding the inclusion of persons with disabilities. By elucidating the relationship between social exclusion and psychological well-being, the findings will support the design of interventions that foster mental health and social integration, benefiting both individuals and the broader community (Uzo, 2024; Balogun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring social exclusion and its psychological effects on persons with disabilities in Ido Local Government Area, Oyo State. It does not consider other forms of discrimination or different geographic regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Social Exclusion: The process by which individuals are systematically marginalized from participating fully in society.
  • Psychological Effects: Emotional and mental responses resulting from adverse social conditions.
  • Persons with Disabilities: Individuals who experience long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments.
